I said hello to Shirl, who was bringing down two fingers on the keys of the cash register; the drawer sprang forward, as if it too wanted to get a punch in. She didn't hello back.

Wanda must have been on her three-minute break, for she was standing behind the soda fountain eating a rainbow-sprinkled doughnut and with a cup of coffee in her other hand.

"Hi, Wanda," I said as I crawled up on one of the imitation leather stools beside Dodge Haines, who started chortling and nudging me in the ribs as if we were best buddies. Maybe that's why I liked the Windy Run Diner customers. At least they didn't get physical with a person.

"Hi, hon." She put down her coffee cup and put her doughnut on a napkin. "What can I get for you?"

"No, Wanda. Looks like you're on your break. You shouldn't be waiting on anyone."

She flapped her hand. "Oh, it's all up 'cept for half a minute. That's okay"

But in half a minute a person could do a lot. I said this. "You could dive into Lake Noir, say 'I do,' shoot Shirl—"

Wanda just thought that was the funniest. She doubled over laughing. For some reason, being around a person like Wanda made me feel good. Maybe it was because she found me worth waiting on, even during her three-minute break. I don't know.
